Rye Tan

Area of triangle = 180.5 Area of square = 180.5 x 2 = 361 Number of small squares on each side = square root (361) = 19

Number of squares used = 18 + 17 + 16 + ... + 3 + 2 + 1 = (18 / 2)( 1 + 18 ) = 171

Just something to share. A Romanian friend has asked me to help with a mathematics question that her daughter has to solve. The girl is in the 5th grade, which is of course equivalent to our P5. The question is very doable, and the strength of the model method reveals itself in such a question. I am told that the Romanian schools employ segments instead of boxes for their methods, which is something that I need to find out more about. The translated question is as follow: "Half of a number is 5 more than a quarter of a second number. If the sum of the two numbers is 814, what are the two numbers? " Short walk in the park for our contributors.

Thanks for sharing Xavier. You are right. The model method is indeed powerful in these sort of qns.

My daughter tried to solve this qn. Is the working and and correct?

Xavier Sng

Hello Samantha. Yes, the working is fine. I would suggest that your daughter utilise the model Adrian posted above as it is simplier. She has done a good job nevertheless.

Thanks Xavier! She didnt use model method for a long time.. However, there is no harm to learn other methods.. Have a nice Saturday! 😊

She did just fine. I can see that she is able to gather her thoughts with the method she employed. Her method appears to me to be in the no-man's-land between model-solution and algebra-solution, so I suppose she is in the progressing stage. Just venturing a guess. Is she in Secondary one?

She will be taking her psle soon.. Thank you for your feedback! 😊

1/3 = 3/9 of fruits were papayas 1/9 of fruits were rock melons Hence 5/9 of fruits were watermelons. If a set of fruits consisted of 3 papayas and 1 rock melon, the total cost would be = 3 × $2 + $7 = $13 $156 ÷ $13 per set = 12 sets The amount spent on the watermelons = 12 × $3 × 5 = $180
