If a student doesn't know the formula for the sum of squares, then a systematic listing should do the trick as well, since 7 isn't very large.

Okay, I readily admit that I feel stupid just trying this, but here goes: 7/10 + 11/2 = 6 1/5 16/5 + 9/3 = 6 1/5 The missing number in the circle is 6 1/5.

Okay just guessing.

Sometimes I think primary kids are stressful studying maths.... I'm also puzzled how to do this... This qn is from a friend whose kid is in Qifa P1.

Sometimes I wonder what has happened to our sch maths ... it is no longer maths we learn in the past. But maths that test ur IQ logic that even adults can't solve 😦😦

But primary one dun do fraction isn't it?

My guess is 1. Difference of any 2 numbers is sum of 1 or more numbers in other circles. Make sense?

Honestly I don't have any clues. 😂

I think brain teasers like this question are fine if they are bonus questions or challenges posed to students for extra-curricular activities. If they become bread-and-butter questions, I fear the expectations become unrealistic. It is fun to attempt these once in a while, but if it becomes a daily occurrence something will have to give, namely our sanity.

Is Qifa giving such "useless" questions now...? :'(

Xavier Sng

Whatever that we might think of Qifa Primary School, the school has produced the goods : http://www.qifapri.moe.edu.sg/qql/slot/u316/About%20us/School%20Publications/Qifa-NL-2nd-ver8.compressed.pdf

Maybe this is not such a useless question if you deem yourself an accomplished student who was nurtured there, isn't it? :)

Zhong Shu Hao

I won't say this Q is totally useless bah... But without any guides to this question... Dunno whether this question is testing on the students' creativity or what...

Xavier Sng

I agree with with you that the question would be less caustic with a more pronounced degree of hint or guide, but we should just try it in the spirit of lightheartedness. The question has at least brought to our attention that if it were to be set in a better way, it can be a real help to the students who attempt it. As to how a better question can be set, that is another question altogether.

Hi Xavier Sng I don't quite understand the part where " the number of notes had increased by 3". Bec the number of notes Karen had actually increased from 120 pcs to 135 pcs..the additional 15 pcs…this is the part that I got stuck…can help?

Xavier Sng

Greetings Ivin. Sure, I can explain that. You see, the value of five $2-notes is equal to the value of two $5-notes. If Karen handed over two $5-notes to Jamie, Jamie would have to hand five $2-notes to Karen. That resulted in Karen gaining three extra notes while Jamie losing three notes. So if Karen gained 15 notes, she must had handed ten $5-notes ($50 in value) in return for accepting twenty-five $2-notes (also $50 in value) from Jamie. Overall gain in the number of notes for Karen? 25 - 10 = 15, hence her original stash of 120 pieces of notes (of which all were $5-notes) became 135 (of which a hundred and ten were $5-notes and twenty-five were $2-notes.)
