Long piece plus short piece plus pipe = 653. Long piece plus pipe = 533. So from here, find short piece. After that use the info given to find the other piece of rope i.e. longer piece. Once u know the length of the ropes, plus into the first mathematical statement and you get an equation. The pipe can be found by subtracting llength of ong piece and short piece from 653.

You are most welcome Perhaps someone can prove that 7^10 - 5^10 is divisible by 11, because I have no inkling how barring the use of an electronic calculator.

Er..... why does ending with "4" means it is not divisible by 7? O.o

Xavier Sng

If you look at the table in the picture I had posted for this question, only numbers that has 1, 3, 7 and 9 in the ones place for indices of base 7 can be divisible by 7. 4 is not in the table.

Zhong Shu Hao

Yah that means that a number ending with "4" can't be an indices of 7.... But it doesn't mean that it cannot be divisible by 7 right...?

Xavier Sng

I see your point.

And what do you reckon?

Zhong Shu Hao

No idea atm too.... >.<

Okay, since 7^10 is divisible by 7, and 5^10 is not, 7^10 - 5^10 cannot be divisible by 7. How is that?

Thanks for pointing out the lapse. I hope the last reasoning covers it.

Zhong Shu Hao deserves special mention for pointing out a lapse which is now addressed.
