Let's start by finding the volume of the cut out block. It's volume is the area of the face x depth. The face is the area of the square + the area of the four equal triangles = 8x8 + 4(8x8/2) = 192 cm^2. So the volume of the cut out block is 192x12 = 2304 cm^3. The volume of the whole block is 30x12x30 = 10800 cm^3, so after the cut out is removed, we subtract to find 10800 - 2304 = 8496 cm^3.

Not sure if I'm on the right track...
The star figure is made up of a sq & 4 triangles.
Volume of star figure - 8x8x12x3=2304cm^3
Volume of the box- 30x30x12=10800cm^3
Volume of shaded- 10800-2304=8496cm^3
