For students who need a visual model... In the problem, we may start with the 'after' model and add/subtract quantities to arrive at the 'before' model. Following that, we can look for equal units to solve.

Hello ZueWen. The reason is that the number of scones is represented by 2 units and 28 scones. After giving away 86 cupcakes, the number of cupcakes became half the number of scones. Half of two units and 28 is one unit and 14.

Let us assign 30 units to represent the number of oranges initially. Apples -> 30 units + 70 Oranges -> 30 units 60% of the apples were sold, leaving 40% or 2/5. 40% of (30 units + 70) = 12 units + 28 5/6 of the oranges were sold, leaving 1/6. 1/6 of 30 units = 5 units 12 units + 28 + 5 units = 861 17 units = 833 1 unit = 49 Hence 60 units + 70 = 3010 fruits at the start
