Working backwards - A has 400 at the end. Since it double, it had 200 at the start. This means that B gave A 200. On returning A->B, B will have 400+200=600 But this is after B doubled. Hence B will have 300 at the start. Finally = 1200-200-300 = 700 C has 700 at the start

Thank you so much for your kind words, Izam Marwasi. The truth be told some of my best teachers were, in all seriousness students that I had taught many years ago. Their young minds were uncluttered by conventional wisdom and established mechanisms. They played a big part in helping me understand that problem-solving is essentially best driven by attitude, and not by high-sounding methodology.

The working so far is on the right track with just 1 more step to go: from the 1st and 3rd equation, we can conclude that 3 Breadths = 360m. The rest of the solution, I think shouldn't be a problem.

Many apologies for going MIA for a couple of days. I got a little busy over the weekend after the sharing session on Friday. I must first of all thank all the parents and students who turned up on Friday. I sincerely hope you benefitted from the session. Meanwhile, I will share this question which a parent sent me. Honestly, this question may be a little over-set.However, it is possible to have this question in Paper 1 for the purpose of separating the As from the A*.Do watch the video till the end for an important announcement. :) Hope this helps!

Can I ask how you can solve this question using the model method? Because I can only solve it using algebra/simultaneous equations (which is a Sec 2 topic, btw) and even the solution provided uses algebra/simul eqns. It's from the 2014 Catholic High SA2 paper. Does anyone know if these kinds of questions might come out in the PSLE?

Mavis low, actually, if your child is comfortable with algebra, solving the 2 linear equations is also a viable option: 8y - 3x = 730 --- (1) y - x = 35 --- (2) The best part is can use calculator to verify answer, so there's no way not to get it right 😄

We may not need the models to solve this but it does give a pictorial of what's happening with the $730.
