I calculate the total score of the 65 students. Class L scored on average 13 marks higher, thus the 35 students in class L contributed 35x13= 455 marks higher than class K. If we take 5200 - 455=4755, this will be the total marks scored by the 2 classes after we remove the higher average score of 13 by class L. Thus the average of class L will be 4745รท65= 73. But I think yr method is faster although it requires more heuristic thinking. Tks Xavier for yr help!

The idea is to try and get equal units so that we can divide a quantity by the number of units. Then the question to ask your child is how we can get the equal units (by taking away the 'extras' from the bars and the total). Once we have the equal units to represent the total, we can divide equally to find what 1 unit is. At P2, it might not be easy for some students to formulate 3u + 40 = 340 straightaway.
