I found the original total to be $5000 similar to the above. However I changed 60% to 3/5. so the refrigerator cost 3u and the tv cost 5u. So 8u=5000, u = 625. So the refrigerator cost 3(625) = 1875.

New length is 5/4 of the old length.
New width is 13/10 of the old width.
5/4 times 13/10 = 65/40
65/40 - 40/40 = 25/40
25/40 times 100% = 62.5% (ans)

Leonie, your answer is very close to being correct. Your only mistake is calculating the answer at the end. 25/40 x 100 = 125/2 = 62.5%.

Good observation, Maggie Lukes! Leonie R Tan, your child knows how to solve this problem. :)

Hi Maggie and Xavier, haha I m the one who doesn't understand why the ratio ( not the length) can be used to times....

I see. Since the question does not provide the actual dimensions, and the required answer is the increment of area in terms of percentage, the idea of area derived from the percentage change or fractional change in the length and width is employed. Please allow me to provide an example below.

Elegant. I solved it using decimals and algebra, but your method using equivalent fractions is interesting.

Maggie Lukes: very often the numbers in the questions afford many opportunities to employ very simple methods to solve the problem. The trick is to spot them. :)
