Who can help without algebra? There were some passengers travelling in a train. After 52 passengers alight another 160 passengers boarded the train, there r 3 times as many passengers as before. How many passengers r ther in the train at first?

Change: 2u 2u = 160 - 52 = 108 1u = 54

I also get 54. It's correct?

So 3 times r divide by 2 instead?

Edlynn Rose

In the end, there are 3units of passengers while there were 1unit of passengers at first. This shows that there is an increase in the number of passengers by 2u. When 52 passengers alighted and 160 passengers boarded, this increases the number of passengers in the train by 108. Hence, 2units = 108, 1unit = 54. Hope that clarifies :)

Mister Yeo's method is perfectly correct, but John read 60 pages by Friday instead of 90. Just a little glitch, no biggie. God knows I made more than my fair share of careless mistakes!

Thanks Xavier for spotting my careless mistake. Tough trying to remember the question and flip to note pad and solve it. 😀

Mister Yeo, can you be so kind to teach me how you present your work here without snapping a photo? By now you should be well aware of my abysmal photographic skill. I am desperate!

I use my Samsung note to solve the question. Then do a screen capture.

Clever. Okay, I am hardly tech savvy so though there is a tablet somewhere in the house, I think I will just have to rough it out with the mark one eyeball.

Replacing with a more proportionate model as the previous was very out of scale.
