I will.... But can you repost the question in the correct orientation?

4 units actually equals 252 + 300 =552 1 unit =138 Thus Sufia left 138

200% is not 1/5

Pauline Vong Nyit Li

200% is actually 2 times (200/100, omit all the 0, hence you will get 2), meaning Elle has 2 times as many muffins as Francis. Hope the answer is correct and the working helps you !

May I know how to explain to kid 9u - 18 = 3x ~ x4 10u - 14 = 4x ~ x3 TQ

Pauline Vong Nyit Li

Make equations based on the model drawings. Thus, Diana 9◻️ - 18 muffins = 3x Francis 10◻️ - 14 muffins = 4x

Pauline Vong Nyit Li

Since the question wants Elle, meaning we want 20 ◻️, hence you have to get rid of X. If your child doesn't understand what is u, you can use ◻️ instead..

Ok thanks...trying to digest. :)

Is this answer correct?

Eunice Leong

Is the answer $840?

Soo Vei Li

The correct answer is $840 but solving it requires student to work with 'parts' and 'units' which is not expected of students at this level nor PSLE.

Chek HG Moon

Hmm… please show working, thanks

Let y be the total. Y/8 +175 + 455 + shoes = y Y/8 + 175 +455 + 3/11(y - 455) =y Y=840

Units and parts IS in the PSLE syllabus... Can a model method solve this problem?

Eunice Leong

Yes a model can help. This question touches on fractions too

Izam Marwasi

Eunice Leong..tried using model but is difficult to cut bcoz 455 is not divisible by 11... Can only think of algebraic method...but need to explain to my kid... Care if someone can draw the model...

Thanks Rye Tan....its quite complicated with the fractions.. wondering whether a PSLE student can comprehend this..hopefully this QN will not be in this year PSLE.... Once again..thank you

Chek HG Moon

It's really complicated. I couldn't figure it out. Thanks for the effort and answer.

Do you need any help in the explanation?

Chek HG Moon

Yes, Ryan Tan, thanks.

From the model I gather that 1 unit=$35....total 24units 13units--$455 3units-shoes 8units-$175+ 1/8 of 24 units 8units= $175+3 units 5units=$175 1 unit=$35.. That is what I see from the model...is it really necessary for those fractions with 'weird' denominators..LOL

Izam how did you get 24 units in the first place? G&C?

Izam Marwasi

Sorry I was calculating 8/8 minus 175- 1/8 as 7/8-$175 which is wrong!! Got a negative value for the shoes...so I should agree that the fractions like 175/8 is necessary for this.. Thanks once again

Chek HG Moon

Okay, I got it. Thanks

Pauline Vong Nyit Li

Chek HG Moon - my P5 girl used a slightly different way to solve this question. Since they have the same denominator, she omitted them (eg 7/8 became 7u and 8/8 became 8u). No need to do complicated decimals. Hope it's correct to do it this way !

Izam Marwasi

Pauline Vong Nyit Li...after going thru what we had gone thru yesterday your working is showing 3 units for shoes which is not possible unless its an assumption... Decimals is definitely required for these question... How do you get the shoes to be rightly 3 units in the first place?

Rye Tan

IMO, this problem has errors everywhere. If I remember correctly, even when the final answer is $840, the price of the shoes does not end in 2 d.p.

Pauline Vong Nyit Li

Izam Marwasi it is a fact not an assumption. Question says 3/11 of the remaining money on shoes, hence 3◻️ is for shoes and 8◻️ is for watch ($175) + left with 1/8.

Izam Marwasi

No ...I don't think so...your working does not show that...

Rye Tan

Pauline's solution is correct. It is the standard solution for "units and parts".

Izam Marwasi

OK..thanks ...sorry Pauline Vong Nyit Li..
