Think this is a missing right angled mark

If (c) is correct, (d) should also be correct. Assuming all are straight lines.

I agree with Ariel, there should be additional information in order to solve this question. A right angle mark at the unnamed angle should make answer 3 correct.

Hi, can anyone help with this question?

I hope it's correct ! Answer is 2-y

Xavier Sng

The age difference is unchanged at 2. By removing y years and adding 2 years to each of their ages, the ratio becomes 4 : 2 = 2 : 1 Answer (2 - y) years

Alex Tham

Yes, the answer is correct. Thank you both!

Here u go.

Eugene Ng Ming Teck

In the first condition Ahmad has 120x2 more than Benny. When you draw the 2nd condition retain the same models from the 1st condition as comparison.

Looking at the model... Condition 2... 4u-u=4x120 3u=480 u=160.. So the answer is B had $160 at first...or what is the correct answer... I got A=$600 and B=$360 at First.. Confused now!!

Izam Marwasi

Nice explanation Yeo See Yeong.. Your answer is same with mine... But my understanding of the models is really very bad... Thanks anyway..

Izam Marwasi

Yeo See Yeong..your solution of "" u+120+240+120=3u"" Can explain where can I see this.. I really cannot visualize this..thankyou.

Yeo See Yeong

Don't mention. My pleasure. Actually I can derive the model from the algebra. It will look the same. I think Eugene probably saw the ratio of 1:3 as 1:4.

Eugene Ng Ming Teck

Ahmad has 3x more not 3x as many.

Haha hate it when it boils down to English

Oh. I take back my words. Thanks for the correction. English bad. Haha

Izam Marwasi

Oh I see what u mean Eugene Ng Ming Teck...so the answer for Ahmad got $600 at first is wrong...yup I think u are right... To be frank..my daughter teacher had explained that 3 times more and 3 times as many as some students got $480 and some got $600 as an answer... The teacher out of sympathy marked both as 'correct'.as the answer key to this QN is $600 for Ahmad...now I can see where the confusion is... Thank you very much Eugene and also Yeo See Yeong.. Really appreciate this discussion.. Thanks again..

Yeo See Yeong

Izam, now should be u+120+240+120=4u. This is because the new A is 4 times as much (or 3x more) than the new B

I need the sympathy points from the teacher.

Marked 'O' means original (at first). 'Arrow' means if it happens and 'X' means it didn't happen. 'If' means if it happens but didn't happen eventually. Hope it helps !

So the correct answer is the amount of money Ahmad and Benny had at first is $520 and $280 respectively.. Am I right?

BA Poh Ann

Thought ur pic only asked for Ahmad's amount?

Izam Marwasi

Haahaa Pauline Vong Nyit Li.. Your answer is same with mine..but there seems to be different answers... Really doesn't knows which is the correct one...

BA Poh Ann

Yes Benny's amt is $280. :)

Izam Marwasi

Yes BA Poh Ann.. Since the total amt is $800 I am just deducing that B got $280...

Yeo See Yeong

Eugene is correct

Izam Marwasi

Yeo See Yeong...what's the correct answer then for A? Is it $600/$480 or $520?..

Pauline Vong Nyit Li

Oh.. I spot the mistake.. The word is 'more'. I'll redo !

Pauline Vong Nyit Li

The trick is 'Ahmad will have 3x MORE than Benny' !

Izam Marwasi

Pauline Vong Nyit Li...and the others..thankyou very much... Really need to digest this.. The difference in 3times more and 3 times as many... Wondering what our kids going thru' at this stage of their education... Is it an English Test or Maths Test...hopefully these type of questions is not in this year PSLE...

Revised

Pauline Vong Nyit Li

Yes. 3 times 'more' is 4:1 but 3 times 'as many' is 3:1. In this case is 4:1... 'More' and 'as many' make huge difference !

Izam Marwasi

Ahmad had 3 times more than Benny...means A:B--> 4:1... Ahmad had 3 times as much as Benny..means A:B--> 3:1.. Hopefully I got it right this time!! haahaa... ThankYou to All..really appreciate it....
