The triangle's base and height is the same as the rectangle's length and breadth. Since a triangle is 1/2 x base x height , it is also 1/2 x rect length x rect breadth. So the area of rectangle is twice of the triangle.
Conceptually, a triangle is always half of a rectangle or a square if you consider its formula.
So the rectangle is 54 cm2 x 2 = 108cm2
From there u can use a model method to solve the rest.
(Would like to amend this to Guess and Check, I dont think model would be helpful here. I read too fast and thanks to fellow contributor Izam Marwasi for pointing it out)

Yes. Ans shld b 6cm. Shaded area = unshaded area. Total area is 108. Use guess and chk to find breadth and length.

I am thinking of algebra which is not suitable for the kids... Care to show the model method Eugene Ng Ming Teck..
6 years ago
Izam Marwasi
Length 3u
Breadth u
3u x u= 108cm²
u²= 108cm²÷ 3
u²=36cm²---> u x u = 6cm x 6cm
u=6cm

Apologies, I realise I read it too quickly. I can only use guess and check for this level. Thank you for pointing it out,

Think will use guess and check

Izam Marwasi
Yup...guess and check...
Based on common factors of 1,3 and 108...that's what I think..

Alternatively, you can also use
Area of triangle = 1/2 x breadth x length = 54
1/2 x 3 x breadth x breadth = 54
breadth x breadth = (54 x 2)/3
breadth x breadth = 36
You will get the same answer :D

You are most welcome ! Hope u understand my workings. Either Sean - (Tim + Ryan) = More (215) OR Sean - 215 (more) = Tim + Ryan. Both will enable you to get the same answer..

Area of Square = 6 * 6 = 36 (squ cm)
So, Area of Unshaded Square + SHADED PART = 36 (Eqn 1)
(Ratio given 2:5; So Area of Rectangle = 90)
Area of Unshaded Rectangle + SHADED PART = 90
(Since Ratio is 1:3; therefore Area of Unshaded Rectangle = 3 times Area of Unshaded Square)
So, 3 * Area of Unshaded Square + SHADED PART = 90 (Eqn 2)
Eqn 2- Eqn 1
2 * Area of Unshaded Square = 90-36 = 54
Area of Unshaded Square = 54 /2 = 27
SHADED PART = Area of Square - Area of Unshaded Square
= 36 - 27 = 9 (Squ cm).

Sorry I had to scribble. It's a great enrichment question. Makes you think about how to relate A to B and vice versa.

Is the answer 270 ? Need to slowly digest it tmr...
6 years ago
Eugene Ng Ming Teck
Haha. Nope, but you can work out the rest of answer. The gist of this question is to understand that A and B are separate quantities and the 100% of each is different. From there one modify A or B in some way that they can relate to each other using units. In this case I change the way B is drawn such that it is based on A's units. Then it becomes solvable.

I remembered getting some figures (with decimals) like this while working on it and thought was not correct, hence never carry on.. Will try again tmr.
