SG chevron_right Primary 5 chevron_right Fractions

Today I will share this a question which looks really intimidating at first. However, it is actually really easy to solve. Students tend to get put off by very wordy questions such as this one. Hence, we should encourage students to be patient and to read the question carefully. Encourage them to 'help' the characters in the question. That is one distraction which can be pretty useful at times and to encourage students to read the questions carefully. Hope it helps!

Am I right to say that if I tilt tank A, the Height is also 15?

Adrian Ng

If we tilt Tank A, the base area will be different. Its no longer 15x20.

Please help with P5 question. TIA. 😊Ann, Ben and Calvin shared the cost of a present for their mother. Ann paid 25% of the total share that Ben & Calvin paid. Ben paid 20% of the total share that Ann & Calvin paid. If Calvin paid $35 more than Ben, how much did the present cost?

If Ann paid 25% of the total share of Ben and Calvin, you can imagine it as Ann paying 1 unit while Ben and Calvin paid a total of 4 units. This tells you that the present cost 5 units and that Ann paid for 1/5 of its price.. If Ben paid 20% of the total price that Ann and Calvin paid, then Ben paid for 1 unit while Ann and Calvin paid a total of 5 units. In this case, the present cost 6 units which means Ben paid for 1/6 of it. Ann paid for 1/5, Ben paid for 1/6, to find Calvin simply add Ann and Ben then subtract from 1 whole.. Calvin then paid for 19/30 of the present.. The difference between the amount Calvin and Ben paid is $35.. Thus, 19/30 - 5/30 = 14/30.. 14 units must be $35. 1 unit must be $2.50 30 units is $75.. The present cost $75.

Please help with P5 question. TIA. 😊There is a figure made up of a rectangle & a square. The ratio of the area of the unshaded square to the area of the shaded square is 2:3. The area of the shaded rectangle is 20% the area of the unshaded rectangle. Given that the area of the shaded part is 27cm2, what is the area of the figure?

Oh! The question didn't say that the square is overlapped with the rectangle. Will try another way.

Thank you so much ya! Will explain it to my gal 😊 she said the figures are overlapping n the teacher told them to draw on their own from reading the question. Thanks again! ✌🏻️✌🏻
