In the diagrams, the unshaded tiles increase by one for each additional layer. For Pattern 15, it would mean adding 1+2+3+4...+13+14. One efficient way to do the addition is to take the first and last numbers (1+14), second and second last (2+13), etc. We can see that they add to 15. Next thing is to work out how many groups of 15 there are in 1+2+3+...+12+13+14.

There are formulas for these triangular numbers but for primary students, it is more important (and meaningful) for them to think about number patterns and generalising from given number patterns.

Tks a lot. Why didn't you add 15 as yr last number in yr total addition?

Goh Wan San

Because u add 1 unshaded tile to Pattern Number 1 to get Pattern Number 2 n so on. So u add 14 unshaded tiles to Pattern Number 14 to get Pattern Number 15

Soo Vei Li

Because in Pattern 2, there's 1 unshaded, Pattern 3 has 2 unshaded, so going by this, we know that Pattern 15 would have 14 unshaded tiles.

Same thing here -- For Q12 draw the models to help you see how the lengths are related. For Q13, here's something to help you start -- if 0.5 of a number is 10, how would you work out the number?

0.45 of a number = 36 same as 0.45 x _ = 36 _ = 36/0.45 _ = 80
