As shown in (a), the boxes on the arrows need to be filled with an operation (divide or multiply) and not just a number. To help your child understand equivalent fractions, you can take a strip of paper and fold into halves, quarters and then twelfths, shading 6/12. The equivalent fractions are more meaningful and visual that way. Once the equivalent fractions are written, the operations can be worked out by studying the numbers in the numerators and denominators. You can also draw models to illustrate.
