Tkz Yueh Mei & Izam for your help! May I know how to explain to the child why use total 12 units instead of 9 or 6 or 15 etc?

Total is unchanged atFirst ratio 2:1 Total 3 End Ratio 1:3 Total 4 To make the total is the same we times the atFirst Ratio by 4 2:1 x 4---- 8:4---Total 12 We times the End Ratio by 3 3:1. x 3---- 9:3---Total 12 Since both AtFirst and End Total Ratio is 12 ..we compare the change

Peter ratio change from 8 to 3 and John from 4 to 9.. The change is 5u which is the movement of the 40 marbles.. Therefore 5u= 40 marbles.. The model drawn by Yueh Mei is self-explanotary... I am just giving an alternative view of the model..

X be the amt of books bought initially. (10x + 25) / (x + 1) = 13. Hence x = 4 and hence total books bought = 5

Before A:C:L -- 3:2:5-- 60:40:100 After ---A have 40% of the total(200u)---A have 80u L gave 45%--45u to A+C... After--L have 55u A+C= 145u...therefore C have 145u-80u= 65 u After Ratio A:C:L--80:65:55 Diff of C-L= 726 65u-55u= 726 u= 72.6 Charlie had 40u at first.. 40x72.6= 2904(answer)
