Tell to your kid, think of a number in ones digit that can be the sum of the number (0+8 to 9+8) is equal to 7 in ones digit

Which single digit number when added to 9 will give you digit 7 in the ones place? Can ask her to try it out in table form with tens and ones column so that as explanation would be clearer to her.

Use manipulatives. Do you have base-ten blocks?

Nora Yusoff

I don't have one Jackie Keepers..planning to get one..

You could use something else like noodles to represent 10s and cereal to represent ones...show an example with the numbers all showing like 15 plus 17 and show how a new group of ten is made. then have her look at the problem with missing ones and tens.

I can send a picture to show what I mean...but hands on would work well in this case.

I would explained that since 7 cant minus 8, we got to add a 10 to the 7 by carry forward the (1)7 to the Tens. Then use 17 minus 8 to get 9. Hope this helps.
