Welcome, Katherine. This is what I explain to my students. By applying this concept, age-related questions should be straightforward to solve.

Total discover ran by both Tom and John around the track in order for them to meet twice
= 200 + 400
= 600 m
Ratio of Tom's speed to John's speed
= 160 m/min : 200 m/min
= 4 : 5
Distance Tom had to run to meet John for the second time
= 600 m × 4/9
= 266 2/3 m

Why is the total distance 200 + 400 m?
Xavier Sng
The two of them had to run a combined 200m to meet each other for the first time. After that they need to run another one round around the track to meet for the second time, hence an additional 400m.
Thanks Adrian again for the excellent models! It's really good and clear!

You are most welcome. It takes either natural ability or a trained eye to see how portions of the figure relate to one another, so if one can do so the solution is very simple, and it is usually also elegant. If not, one would be faced with a daunting task of dismantling the figure and micromanaging the calculations.

This qn seems daunting at first, but after yr clear breakdown, it looks much more manageable. But still, it is difficult for a P6.

I cannot agree with you more on how difficult it is for many of us adults, not to mention the students.
