Oh man.. Why is the question so complicated? ๐Ÿ˜…

Xavier Sng

These sort of questions may be complicated, but if the students learn to deal with them, they can be helpful in teaching them how to do financial planning in the future.

Xavier Sng

Of course, including but not limited to financial planning.

Pardon for super tiny small handwriting. Working correct ?

Xavier Sng

Not at all. Your daughter keeps her work neat and tidy. It is a real plus. I would advise her to utilise less of the space for the just-in-case. The solution is sound.

Xavier Sng

Perhaps she could write in pencil in the bottom left hand corner working to prove that the numbers she churned out fit nicely with the question.

Voon Jasmine

Thanks for your advice. Yes usually she don't use the whole page cos she did it in rough paper n got the answer n copied it

I look back my solution an I don't even what I was doing. Redo and resend. Thanks Xavier Sng!

Mister Yeo, your working is basically correct. The only mistake was a miscalculation and not due to a wrong concept. You do know what you were doing. Thumbs up!

I don't even know what I was writing. Haha. Really trying to think what I was thinking then.

Xavier Sng

You are too humble. Really, your concept was spot on.

I would like to say that it is a breeze to use algebra to solve this question. A model for this question requires a fair bit of finesse and that can be a challenge for students under examination conditions and pressure.

Yeo See Yeong

It is. Poor kids. .. I can understand that model helps to visualize and help them understand and breaks down question. But for complex questions, it is really time consuming.

That is why the model method is meant to help students gain mastery through concrete and pictorial so that they can visualize the abstract through algebra.

1st, find common multiple of 70m and 105m. 70m x 3 = 210m 105m x 2 = 210m In 210m, there are 6 trees (ie. 2 x 3) and 10 lamp posts (ie. 5 x 2) 10 - 6 = 4 (ie. There's 4 more lamp posts than trees on 210m of road) 112 / 4 = 28 28 x 210m = 5880m

There are 52 weeks and twelve 30-day periods In 365 days. In twelve 30-day periods, Raina's father contributed 12 ร— $10 = $120 Raina contributed $278 - $120 = $158 If Raina had saved $2 a week, she would have saved $104 in 52 weeks. In reality she saved $54 more ($158 - $104). 54 รท (5 - 2) = 18 Raina needed to add $3 (5 - 2) to every $2 note to turn it into a $5 note. Hence there were 18 $5-notes.

365 days = 52 weeks 1 month = 30 days = 12 ร— 10 = $120 from Father Amount left for $2 vs $5 notes = $278 - $120 = $158. Assume all are $2 notes. If each week saves $2, 52 weeks = 52ร—2 = $104 Actual - Assume= 158 - 104 = $54 (value of $5 notes) Difference in value of $5 vs $2 = 5-2 = $3 No. of $5 notes = 54 รท 3 = 18 This Q is a combination of part whole + Assumption Method. The days/mths/types of notes make this question confusing. Hope it helps.
