Problem #4 CIMC 2015: Twenty rabbits are hopping along the same path in the same direction, each at a different constant speed. The first rabbit leaves the starting point at noon. Each of the other rabbits leaves one minute after the preceding one. The second rabbit catches up with the first rabbit two minutes after it starts hopping. The third rabbit catches up with the second rabbit three minutes after it starts hopping. The pattern continues, so that the twentieth rabbit catches up with the nineteenth rabbit twenty minutes after it starts hopping. How many minutes past noon does the twentieth rabbit catch up with the first rabbit?

21 minutes after noon.

Oh. And why so

Xavier Sng

The ratio of the speeds of the rabbits from the first to the last is 2:3:4:5.......:21. At 1220 the ratio of the distances hopped by first rabbit to the 20th rabbit was 40:21. Another minute would change the ratio to 42:42, meaning the 20th rabbit caught up with the first.
