Awkward question. What does "6 fewer than twice Cathy did" means? Betty has 6 lesser than Cathy? Or Betty has half of what Cathy has?

P5 maths. Part a answer is 64cm2. I want to understand the theory of 36 - 28 = 8cm for the side of the unshaded square. Why need to 36-28...? With part a, I know how to get part b. Thank you.
