If you count the total number of triangles, you will see there are 12 of them in the second question. Four of them are shaded which is 4/12 of the rectangle. She needs to shade 7-4 = 3 more.

Part of the working is correct, their age difference is 36 years. The ratio of their age is 1 : 4. Therefore 3 units = 36, 1 unit = 12. His son will be 12 years old then. So, it will be in 10 years' time.

Hi, Candy. It should be H - M = 240, not 2L. You are finding how much more Helen has than Mary when you do this subtraction. There is a hint in the question. Helen has 3 more units of beads than Mary's beads. :)

Going by the answer that Linda has 120, then Helen has 840 and Mary has 580. This wouldn't work out to be 7:4.

haahaa ...380 beads or 380 marbles Brandon?

0 marbles...my final answer. Problem solved.

If you draw models to represent the quantities, you can see that 940-700 gives us the difference in amounts between Helen and Mary. Thus 3 units represent that difference.

No. of boys = (6 + 4) ÷ (16 - 14) = 5 No. of cards = 5 × 16 - 4 = 76 or 5 × 14 + 6 = 76

Thanks for your quick reply. Is there a more visual method so that it can be easily understood by kids?

After having 14 cards each, to get 16 cards per person, they used the 6 leftovers and needed 4 more (last boy had only 12). So they needed 6+4=10 cards. Since each boy should get 2 more cards, number of boys = 10 cards/2 cards person = 5 boys. Number of cards = 5x14 + 6 = 72.
