Group of 6 results in a surplus of 5, group of 5 results in a surplus of 2 (same as short of 3).
Using Xavier and Raymond's method, we can add 13 balloons to both cases and will end up with no surplus. LCM of 5 and 6 is 30. So 30 - 13 = 17.

Thanks Yeo See Yeong. We understand n get the LCM 30, but still couldn't figure out how to get 13.

Appreciate if u can show steps on how 4 n 7 being derived. Thanks Xavier

Serene Koon, if you realise that when you pack in groups of 4, 2 extra sweets also implies you are short of 2, the problem is easily solved.
Step 1: Go & buy 2 more (fictitious) sweets. Now, whether you pack in 4 or 7, there will be no leftover
Step 2: The lowest common multiple of 4 & 7 is 28
Step 3: Remove the 2 fictitious sweets. Tada... 28-2 =26

The marker probably followed the answer key like a lemming without realizing that there are other permutations. Nothing wrong with what I saw.

The mother said the teacher's explanation was because cant use the number "x4" more than once in the equation..
I don't understand the explanation by the teacher.

Should write a note on the paper and ask the kid show to the teacher. It is not so much to get back the mark but let the kid know that his answer is correct.

Just to be fair, I know of many teachers who fought tooth and nail over the answers they deemed permissible during the vetting of the answer key. There were occasions where either the other teachers out voted those who objected or that the HODs wanted to simplify the marking process.

I think the teacher is confused with number vs digit. The mother should let the teacher know that she is not correct.

Chong Ji Lian, I bet the said teacher couldn't understand his or her own explanation. I suspect it could be a face-saving exercise.

So simple, One & only answer Singapore schools teachers, what they expect as a answer our kids have to write.

It should be testing the concept
As in must be a bigger number to minus a smaller number n the answer is correct
That should be the way rather than making sure the figures follow the answer sheet

Suggest you speak with the school head of subject to get clarification since going through the teacher's route doesn't work. Thanks.

Yes the mummy of the child still cannot accept the teacher's explanation so she will go and ask again. The latest reason given is that (64-34) is repeated number. So cannot. But 64-30=34 can because 34 in this case is standalone. What kind of explanation is that??!!

I don't get it 😂
If I were the parent, I will clarify with the Principal. Not because I am hard up for the marks, but rather what concept is being tested? Any ambiguities in the phrasing of the question? Sigh poor kids....

This is worrying if the teacher/school only has a one track mind

Your kid is correct. A number is made up of digits. If they want to use the logic of 4 can not repeat, the instruction should be digit cannot repeat. Else by the same logic, 3 appears twice and that is wrong also.

Maggie Lukes...even the best teacher makes mistake... But this mistake is unforgivable to me..it discouraged the child..
The teacher is just plain lazy and marked it wrong...oh!..Rosyth..no wonder the students there are stress...
Even the teacher finally marked it as right.. If it is my kid...I would request a sincere apology from the teacher concerned.. No two ways about it....
Maggie Lukes
Izam, I have been a teacher for a long time. I have always encouraged my students to question my marking. This teaches them to explain their answer and builds their confidence. Creating an atmosphere which encourages collaboration and discussion helps the students AND teacher learn. Should the teacher apologize? Yes, of course, but it need not be lengthy or grovelling. A "Good for you, you found a different answer than I expected." would do more for the student than a parent's interference.
