Hi everyone, could someone help me with this question. I can't see what I'm missing. The answer is supposed to be 99.

How can the answer be an exact number when the number of packs are both variables?

Mohi Uddin Ahmed

That's why I'm confused? It's supposed to be for something called 11+ prep in England for grammar schools. I can't seem to see how they got 99.

Jojo Celestino

My answer is 8x + 5y - 29.. There might be more to the question..

Mohi Uddin Ahmed

That was my other thought but I've been told this is the full question and the purge parts are not linked.

Jojo Celestino

I have no idea then how they got 99.. :( sorry..

Only 4 part c? Where is a n b? Could it be a continuation?

Mohi Uddin Ahmed

Thought so to Helen Soh but have been told there isn't any info that helps with C.

Hi anyone can help with the working? It's a 2 steps problem sum. Thanks!

Chong Ji Lian

Has to be a multiple of 6 because can fit 6 in a box. Between 15 and 21 only number 18 is a multiple of 6 which is also a multiple of 3. So the answer is 18.

Doreen Quek-Tan

Yup ans is 18 but not sure how the work out shld be

Judy Lim

Multiples of 3 are 3,6,9,12,15,18 Multiples of 6 are 6,12,18 So the common multiple is 18

This is a P1 question lor... Difficult to explain to my girl

Chong Ji Lian

Can teach her to list down as how Judy said. If she know her 3 and 6 times table she should be able to list down. Just start to list from 15 up to 21. And see which is the common number between the 3 x table and the 6 x table. Or you could draw to explain to her?

Doreen Quek-Tan

Thanks All... Yup I ended up using drawings

use LCM of 3 and 6 and clue is given that the number is between 15 n 21, so ans is 18.

Janne Lim

The kids will only learn 6 time table in P2. For P1, they will need to draw upto 21 cakes, 2 sets. Then circle in group of 3 in set 1 & group of 6 in the other set of cakes. This is covered in the topic: Grouping.

Janne Lim

Doreen, which CHIJ ? My girl is also in CHIJ... but P2 this year 😉

Chong Ji Lian

What if my child already knows her 6x table even in p1. Is just listing down an acceptable working? Or must they still draw it out?

Jenny Teo

Doreen, my twins in OLN too haha I can understand

Janne Lim

Still must draw and circle to do grouping. They won't even be allowed to use division sign...because they have not been taught. That was what happen to my girl last year...Singapore's education system....😓

Janne Lim

My is in OLQP. I have a friend's daughter in OLN..but P5.

Janne, that's what I did (drawings) to explain to my girl

Chij oln maths super difficult.. I just posted one question.. Give in p3... Test in p5.. Sometimes Im wondering what the school try to do

Chong Ji Lian

Maybe they trying to sieve out the very good ones. Hence the more difficult questions that only the smarter ones would know how to do.

Seriously! P1 kid Math is so tough! How on earth to find time to draw all the boxes during exam! I won't let my kid run dry in this school !

Emily Yew

Muz draw 21 cakes out? Then group?

Carolina Joseph

The boxes I drew is to explain the steps. The actual drawing need to be drawn is only on the last step.

Carolina Joseph

Or instead of the boxes, we can draw circles. Then for the cake, we draw lines.

I assume that the 15 who can do both are in the original 23 and 25.

25 + 23 =48 48 - 15 = 33 can solve either one or both 40 - 33 = 7 can solve neither

I think there's no other way. This was a tested question in P5. I won't be surprised if the teacher gives the same answer. I remembered I Learnt this in Sec 2 but now this is taught at P5

Pls help to solve this question. What is the approach used to tackle this kind of question? Many Tks

Maggie Lukes

What level is is for? I can solve it using some pretty complicated algebra. I'd be interested in seeing a different way. Algebraically, the common denominator is 18z. This turns the numerator into 2z^2 + 90 = 27z. This turns into the trinomial equation 2z^2-27z+90=0, This factors into (2z-15)(z-6) = 0 yielding the solutions z=6 or z=7.5. Since numerators and denominators cannot be decimal numbers, we get one solution: z=6.

Cheah Hui Toh

This is for P4.. Have not learnt algebra yet?

Maggie Lukes

Yikes. My solution will not work for P4. Guess and check?

LCM is 18 right? So 2 x Z + 15 = 27 27 - 15 = 12 12 / 2 = 6

Andrew Yap

Must be whole number? Algebraically should have 2 answers, 6 and 7.5.

Choy Ban Heng

The setting (the way the question is set) is not appropriate for P4. Without using symbolic algebra, the student can use the idea that the whole number Z has to be even. Start with 2, check and then keep increasing by 2 till the equation is satisfied. Basically a guess and check method. For some students, they may be able to understand Judy's method.

Johanna Kittie

Just wondering if we use guess and check, can we assume the fractions should be expressed in proper fractions, therefore Z should be greater than 5 start checking for Z=6?

Cheah Hui Toh

Thank you all😊! Judy, Can I know how you get the number 15 in the equation?

Judy Lim

15 came from the numerator 5, to be multiplied by 3 to get equivalent fraction

Cheah Hui Toh

Judy, how did u know have to multiply by 3 when you don't know Z?

Judy Lim

I use listing method first

Choy Ban Heng

Hui Tong, for P4 students, they learn to add two fractions with different denominators by converting each to the same. Usually, they do not express the simplification in a single fraction. For P4, it is also reasonable to use proper fractions and so, the student can start with 6 and check. As Judy mentioned, she started with listing before she saw the 3. Students are also unlikely to do that.

My method but still involves some guessing....

For P4 students it is necessary to state that z stands for a whole number. Students will see it as finding the sum of two fractions: z/9 + 5/z As the sum is 3/2, which is equivalent to 6/4, 9/6, 12/8, .... , z must be an even number. By Guess and Check method, students get z=6. That is, 2/3 + 5/6 = 4/6 + 5/6 = 9/6

Cheah Hui Toh

Thank you all! Tks Adrian for the clear and straightforward explanation👏🏻
