An alternate approach

I'd use Assumption Method.
If 35 cows, total 140 legs.
140 - 74 = 66 (i need to reduce the number of legs by 66)
4 + 2 = 6 (If I swap 1 cow for 1 duck, the gap will reduce by 6)
66 / 6 = 11 (i need to swap 11 cows for 11 ducks)
35 - 11 = 24 (total animals - 11 ducks = 24 cows.

We tried Assumption Method but were stuck with the 66 legs. Thanks Callistus M Chan.

For that step, you can't always subtract. If they gave the total number of legs, you can do that.
