SG Primary 5 Fractions

Pls kindly help this P5 math.The one in green pen is working from my girl's teacher.I don't get it,my girl's also can't recall.

Let area of square be 1. Area of shaded part is 5/6. Atea of reactangle = 8/3 (as area if sq is 3/8 of reactangle) Area of figure = sq + rect - shaded =1 + 8/3 - 5/6 = (6+16-5)/6 = 17/6 Area of shaded over total area = 5/6 ÷ 17/6 = 5/17 Area of unshaded over total = 1 - 5/17 = 12/17

Question is not clear. Did both start from the same place? this question is not clearly phrased. So, you have to assume that the starting place is the same.
