Hi! Here is a hint. Change 1/3 to 5/15 and 2/5 to 6/15. (Common denominator) If you see the increase from 5/15 to 6/15, this increase is also equivalent to the 12 red ribbons bought by Jillian. :) You can now solve for the total ribbons. :)

Hi! First, deduct 2/9 from 1 to get what Ali and Xiuling eat in total. That would be 7/9. What 2 fractions, when added, give a total of 7/9? At the primary 2 and 3 level, it would be the following for Ali and Xiuling respectively: 1/9 and 6/9 2/9 and 5/9 3/9 and 4/9 or 1/9 and 6/9; 2/9 and 5/9; 3/9 and 4/9; for Xiuling and Ali respectively. At the primary 4 and 5 level, change the fraction 7/9 to 14/18. Find 2 fractions that have a sum of 14/18. To go further, change 7/9 to 21/27, 28/36 or any equivalent fraction. The possibilities will become endless. :)

You have to assume that they were sharing the nine pieces and not cut it further to infinite number of pieces. Also, you could use the number bonds technique for the visualization too.
