This is a ratio problem, unitary way is best method to solve. Over reliance on model drawing is not the way to go.

If you refer to the question, the total units paid for the present is 10(7u+3u), so each person is suppose to pay 2.5u(10u÷4/the question also mentioned that the should be paying equal amount), so 4u-3.5u=0.5u

Hi hi. I was doing mental but after reading the answers by other teachers, I agree that 686 is correct. 784 is the number of men at 8 units. 686 is the number of more men than women.

This question may not be easy for a younger student to understand as 'more than' is an added difficulty. The visual representation using model drawing will make it much clearer that 9 units represent 882 and we are working out 7 units for the answer.
