The extra $600 given to each child resulted in: 1) the $2000 used up 2) a shortage of $3400. $2000 + $3400 = $5400 No of children = $5400/($600/child) = 9 children Mr Teng's bonus = 9x$6000 + $8000 - $3400 = $58600

Simply put, we are trying to find how many children there are. Since each child will get $600 more, this also means that the demand is increased by $600/child. Since the total demand increased by $600/child, and we also know that the demand increased by $5400, we can find the number of child Mr Teng has through: ($5400) / ($600 per child) = 9 children
