$12 : $15 : $30 6 : 9 : 5 So for every 5 $30 tickets sold, 6 $12 tickets are sold. Let this be 1 unit of tickets (of each price) 1 unit of $30 tickets: $150 1 unit of $12 tickets: $72 Difference in amount for every unit= $150 - $72 = $78 Number of units= ($390)/($78) = 5 Hence, Number of $12 tickets sold = 6x5 = 30 Number of $15 tickets sold = 9x5 = 45 Number of $30 tickets sold = 5x5 = 25 Total amount of money collected =30x$12 + 45 x$15 + 25x$30 = $360 + $675 + $750 = $1785. Frustrating. . I cannot get 6:9:5. Thank you very much for the effort in typing.. but I Don not know how you arrive at 6:9:5

Zhong Shu Hao

Ratio of $12 tickets is 2:5. Agree?

Gek Poh

This is how I do it. Then I can get 6:9:5

Zhong Shu Hao

Correct ah. Thats the way I did it too

Gek Poh, to help your child understand how to get the ratio, you can start with a model drawing: draw 3 boxes to represent the 3/10. Next question is how can we get 2 units from the 3? Answer is subdividing into 6 (LCM of 3 and 2, so 3*2) and every 3 small parts forms 1 unit. Then we also subdivide the 7 units to get 14 (also times 2) and every 3 small parts forms 1 unit.

A visual representation to help your child understand.

Your child needs to know: if I have an amount more than you, then I must give you half of the 'more than' amount so that we can have equal amount.

thank you, Vei Li Soo, for the simplified explanation, much easier for a child to understand :)

2/5 of the T-shirts are red, so 3/5 of the T-shirts are blue and yellow. So the first step, is to make the sum of the two numbers of the ratio of blue:yellow T-shirts a product of 3.

Vanitha Guna

That step already done. only the $290 more is confusing Zhong Shu Hao

Zhong Shu Hao

So whats te ration of red:blue:yellow shirts?

Vanitha Guna

14; 6: 15

Gek Poh

And then how?

Vanitha Guna

yes after that need help.

Gek Poh

Why shouldn't red be 6 units as I use 2x3=6

Zhong Shu Hao

Means every 14red shirt, there will be 6blue and 15 yellow?

Zhong Shu Hao

2/5 = 14/35

Zhong Shu Hao

So red is 14 units. Then for blue:yellow, 2:5 -- x3 --> 6:15

Zhong Shu Hao

So ratio is 14: 6 : 15 all right.

Vanitha Guna

Ya after that Zhong Shu Hao

Zhong Shu Hao

So for every 14 red shirts sold, 6 blue shirts are sold. 14 red --> $112 6 blue --> $54 If we let 14 red shirts be 1 unit of red, and 6 blue shirts be 1 unit of blue, Each unit of blue shirts sold will cause the difference in amount collected by $58. Since the total difference in amount collected is $290, ($290)/ ($58/unit) = 5 units

Zhong Shu Hao

Hence, 5 units of blue shirts are sold. Total amount of blue shirts sold = 5 x 6 = 30 Amount collected = 30 x $9 = $270
