You can start by drawing a bar to represent the number of crayons bought and then subdivide to show the amount he gave away.

(175-154)/(178-175)=21/3=7

Can explain why 175-154?

This is the amount of height other boys compensated for the boy who left. I didn't read the question carefully. The answer should be 7+1=8 Average(178x7+154)=175

It is like saying that the boy who left gave 175-154 = 21 cm of his height to the remaining boys to share since he is only 154cm but the average in the group was 175cm.

Actually he is 'returning' the height gain when he joined the group, to other boys after he left the group.

Total spent = 3P (2P fr L n 1P fr J) Saving by J = 1P + 27 Saving by L = 0.5P + 13.5 Add together 3P + 1P + 27 + 0.5P + 13.5 = 216 P = 39 L has 2.5P + 13.5 = 111
