You can work backwards... Start by drawing models to represent the 'after' situation: S has 1 unit and Y has 7 units. Then complete the bars to show the 'before' situation using the info given (92 given away & 8 lost). You can refer to a similar problem solved earlier tonight https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=461246857387569&set=gm.495101037313224&type=1&theater

Is this correct?
6 years ago
Izam Marwasi
End Yvonne 7u
Sheryn u
Dif-6u
Dif in lost/given away= 92-8=84
6u=84
u= 14
At first
Y-7u+8
E-u+92
7u+8+u+92= 8u+100
== 8x14 + 100= 212

Joe Neitham, your model is not fully correct because you did not get the the two girls having same number at the start. But you somehow got the correct answer because of a mistake in solving the algebraic equation. I've shown it in the photo.

Thanks Vei Li Soo for pointing that out :-) So is the answer 106 the number of stickers each of them have at first?

Yes, they each have 106 at first.

I like Izam Marwasi's method as it utilizes the concept of difference to arrive at the answer quickly.
Volume of Clay = 48x30x5 = 7200cm^3. volume of cube = 1000 cm^3. (a) 7200/1000 = 7.2. Therefore, maximum cubes can be formed = 7 (b) Volume of clay left = 200cm^3

(a) 100 min before 1pm is 11.20am.
(b) speed of slower printer
= (70 times 6) divided by (100min - 70min)
= 14 copies of newsletter per min
Each machine printed
14 times 100 = 1400 newsletters
Total number of copies printed by the two machines is thus 2800.
