i think the answer is wrong, will check and get back to you

Let us see if the answer of 213 is valid. John has 400 initially. A removal of 213 and John is left with 187. Rick has 273 initially. An addition of 213 and Rick has 486. 486 - 187 = 299

The ans is $6x/15. How to explain the steps? Does anybody know?

Since both have the same number of notes, a set of a single $5-note and a single $10-note amounts to $15. Given that the average of the two is $3x, the both of them have $6x in total. Hence the number of notes either one of them has is 6x / 15.
