Drawing models will help better visualization. a) 2 shirts -> $9 + $3 = $12 (excess + shortage) 1 shirt -> $12 / 2 = $6 b) 8 x $6 = $48 $48 + $9 = $57 Credit: Excess and shortage concept from Voon Jasmine.

(A). 9+3=12 (excess+shortage) 10-8=2 (difference of 2 items) 12 / 2 = 6 (ans) (B). (10 x 6 ) - 3 = 57 (ans)

The difference between question 4 and question 2 is as follows. Question 4: savings for a PARTICULAR week but Question 2: SAVINGS of 110 cents OVER 4 DAYS, not on Day 4. Is this what you are asking for? :)

you have two equations assuming x as boys and y as girls equations are x+y = 132 , and 1/3x = 2/5y and replacing x to y with second equation would help you to solve problem ... boy =72 and girls =60

Draw a model similar to the one in the other question you posted. The difference in this question is Vicky giving some stamps to Sue.
