If all has 4 legs each, Total legs should b 12 ร— 4 = 48 So 48 - 34 = 14 extra legs 14รท 2 = 7pairs of extra legs

If all animals were cats then the total legs would be 48 which is greater than 34. To trade 1 cat for 1 bird, you have 2 less legs and you need to have 14 less legs. That means you need to trade 7 cats for 7 birds. So you have 5 cats and 7 birds.

Assume all 12 are cats, there'll be 12ร—4=48 legs. 48-34=14(extra legs) 14รท2(legs of a bird)=7 birds Hence, 12-7=5 cats. Ans: 5 cats and 7 birds.

My gal used to do such question in this way. Firstly draw 12 circles to represent the number of animals. Then draw all circles with 2 lines to reprsent 2 legs. With all 12 circles drawn, the no of legs is 24. Then continue to draw another 2 lines till it reaches 34. In the end, there are 5 circles with 4 lines n 8 circles with 2 lines. Answer : 5 cats n 8 birds

U can search you tube for this supposition method. Using supposition method, Step 1 if u r looking for how many cats then starts off with assuming all 12 are birds, which is 12 X 2 legs = 24 legs. Step 2 Difference between actual and assumption. 34 - 24 = 10 Step 3 Diff bw legs 4 - 2 = 2 Step 4 Divide step 2 with step 3 10/2 = 5 U get 5 cats. If u start off with cats as assumption for step 1, ur answer will be 7 birds. (Take note of this). Some schools will teach guess and check first which involves 5-6 columns of working. Can we do it this way? 1 set of cat and bird(2 animals) = 6 legs So 5 sets(10 animals) = 30legs Balance 4 legs comes from 2 birds(to make 12 animals) So, 5 cats and 7 birds
