Figure 1=1sq Figure 2=4sq Figure 3=9sq From figure 1 to 2, add 3 squares. From figure 2 to 3, add 5 squares. Got see the sequence: +3, +5, +7, +9..... So figure 6 wil have 36 squares.

But if the question is asking for Figure 100 then it will take longer time for u to get the answer

May i know how to get 15,30 ?

Count?

Gerald Potassium Hydroxide Koh

Anyway going back to the question u posted, question is wrong lah 1. 1 2. 1 + 4 = 5 3. 1 + 4 + 9 = 14 ... 6. 1 + 4 + 9 + 16 + 25 + 36 = 91 Must count squares of different sizes. .. lol

Tey Pei Ling

If u see the figure properly, figure 2 only has 4 (not 5), figure 3 has 9 (not 14)

Gerald Potassium Hydroxide Koh

U sure or not lol. U check again

Gerald Potassium Hydroxide Koh

Tey Pei Ling

I m pretty sure. The question is asking how many squares are there in Figure 6 and not the total number of squares in all the 6 figures

Gerald Potassium Hydroxide Koh

Haha how many squares means u count the 1 big square too.

Pattern is fig 2 +3 (1 sq +3 = 4), fig 3 +5 (4 + 5 = 9), fig 4 +7 (9 + 7 = 16), fig 5 +9 (16 + 9 = 25), so fig 6 +11 (25 + 11 = 36). Ans is 4.

It should be 6x6=36

Actually Its square right So fig1 gives 1 sq = 1 fig2 gives 2 sq = 4...... fig6 gives 6 sq = 36 If the question is asked for 100 It will be 100 sq = 10000. Finally we have, n sq = n × n.

Andy Lim

Answer should be 91. 1X1=1 2X2=4 3X3=9 4X4=16 5X5=25 6X6=36 1+4+9+16+25+36=91! Lot of people might come to the answer of 36 due to n-square. BUT, the question asked "How many squares are there in figure six?". Thus, 91 is the correct answer NOT 36! Teacher left a huge contestable flaw in this question. There can only be one marking scheme.

I just hope that we do not make the student end up with the wrong answers which may affect his results in future n if he should in future decide to take mathematics olympiad

Unless u are very sure that your method is right & my method is wrong, otherwise I do not see the needs to discuss further here. Lets put a stop here. It's never my intention in the first place to make the student end up with wrong answer.

Assume all 28 are ducks = 28× 2legs = 56 Remaining 72-56 = 16 Difference between goat's no. Of legs and duck's = 4 - 2 = 2 16 ÷ 2 = 8 goats Ducks = 28 - 8 = 20
