Hi Deva Dinesh. There is one known information (Mr Lim) and two unknown information (Mrs Lim and their son).
Hint 1: Use Mrs Lim's distance to calculate Mr Lim's distance.
Hint 2: Use Mrs Lim's distance to calculate her son's distance.
Hint 3: Add the distances in Hint 1, Hint 2 and Mrs Lim's distance altogether. :)

Hi, Deva Dinesh. Use the following hints below to solve the question.
Hint 1: Use the 5:11 ratio and 121 notepads in the 2nd box to find out how many notepads there were in the first box in the end.
Hint 2: Once you solved Hint 1, refer back to the statement
'2/7 of the notepads from the first box to the second box'.
Where do you think the 5/7 of the notepads in the 1st box is now?
Solve these 2 hints and you get your number of notepads in the 1st box at first. :)
The answer is between 70 to 80.
Ok Becos the answer sheet puts 9 instead of 54... Soni think the ans sheet should be wrong. Thks.

Hi, I need help to solve this by model method. (I can solve by algebra but that wouldn't help my P4 girl) thanks!

Thanks Irene! That's kind of how I solved it.. Guess it still requires algebra huh?

This is model using unit... u = unit

But she cannot get the step:
5u-3u = 36-12

Kids will look into methods which require few steps. I think your girl can draw the model of the age comparison now. (ie. Chopra: 5 units, Son: 1 unit). Then, since age increase is the same for both, look at increasing the same units to get new ratio/multiple (ie. Chopra 3 units, Son: 1 unit).
That will determine the value of 1 unit.
1 unit: 12
5 units: 12 x 5 = 60 years old

We can get the initial model, which translates the info that Mrs C is five times as old as her son. But the second model for 12 years later is more complicated. I can draw it.. But don't know how to continue apart from using algebra. And my girl doesn't get the algebra steps. I don't know how you got 1unit = 12 from the second model. Can explain?

To achieve the model, need to achieve the ratio of 3:1
Chopra: 3 x 2
Son: 1 x 2
Hope this helps. If not, I think Vera's model would help. (ie. Draw units on the left of the model until you get the ratio of 3:1)

Yes I get what you say.. But then, what's next? How to move on from here?

hi mavis,
hope this is clear. let me know if u still have doubts. :)

Ah ok.. Clearer now! Thanks! Just that I couldn't see earlier that the 1 unit + 12 for the son is equals to the 1 unit for Mrs C 12 years later. Somehow didn't make that connection. Haiz. 😅
