When you see such questions, you can either use Guess & Check or Assumption method to solve.

At Primary Three, it is strongly encouraged for the child to do Guess and Check. Ensure that the child does a systematic Guess and Check. This will help in getting the full marks.

IF all 8 tables are round tables, you will have 40 customers.
So, subtract 3 from 40 customers. These 3 that you subtract represents one from each table. So, 3 of these tables are now square.
So, you will have 8-3=5 round tables. :)

very clear model and explanation but be mindful of using equal sign. Some schools / teachers may accept 6 units = 420 whilst somemay prefer 6 units - 420. Why? 1 unit for models tend to change from question to question so using - instead of = is recommended. ' - ' means 6 units is represented by 420.

It is alright to use = sign because a unit represents a value, just like 2y = 40. However, it is not right to write 1/4 = $20 as 1/4 is a value, ie 0.25, and 0.25 is NOT EQUALS to $20. Cheers!

The idea of using ' - ' or arrows in place of equal sign is to prevent misinterpretation of the equal sign. The equal sign should be viewed as a relational symbol, indicating that a relationship exists between the numbers or expressions on each side of the equal sign. However, in classroom settings in schools or tuition classes where typically problem-solving is the focus and minimal instruction on relational definitions of the equal sign is explicitly taught, we would want to prevent a situation, as you correctly point out, when pupils state it 25% = $20 which is wrong. Therefore to be safe, some schools advocate the use of arrows and - to ensure that when problem solving becomes mechanical, pupils will not be penalised when they wrongly use the = sign.

I agree with you but schools are now told to use the equal sign for unitary representation. This is to avoid confusion to the kids as the equal sign is also used in the textbook when it comes to unitary representation.

Blue is twice as long as pink ---> Blue is one unit longer than pink.
Yellow is thrice as long as pink ---> Yellow is two units longer than pink.
So, blue is the longest, followed by yellow, then by pink.
Total units of ribbons = 3+2+1 = 6
AND total length of ribbons = 420m
So, 6 units = 420m
