7+11=18, 11-7=4, 10+2=12, 10-2=8, add up is 42. 5-3=2, 5+3=8, 16-9=7, 16+9=25, add up is 42. Should be 42.

This has been posted here before -- it is a poorly set question. I wouldn't worry about trying to solve it. Please look through this FB group's photos to find previous postings with lengthy discussions.

I agree with Vei Li Soo that this is a very poor qn to ask a p1/p2 students. In the first place, I think it doesn't even follow any mathematical rules that is covered in any maths topics.

Actually, I often tell my students not to be overly worried about such kind of questions. If they can't do it, just skip.

I'm curious. This is like the 3rd time I've seen this question posted in this group, but so far nobody has come back with the actual answer from the question's source.

Yah..there is no discernible logic/pattern in this question. The few suggested answers I've seen so far all had different ways of trying to work out a pattern, with all sorts of answers coming out. That's why I've been waiting to see whether the OPs would come back with the recommended answer/working..but so far don't have lor.

This kind of question is mind teaser in my view. There just isn't any significant incentive to put much hard work to answer such questions. I will rather students spend more time on regular questions

The answer is 42.

Hi! I have listed the steps below. Let me know if you have questions about them. :) $550 ---> 1/2 of Keith's amount + 1/4 of Jenny's amount. $1450 ---> 1/2 of Keith's amount + 3/4 of Jenny's amount = (1/2 of Keith's amount + 1/4 of Jenny's amount) + 2/4 of Jenny's amount = $550 + 2/4 of Jenny's amount $1450 = $550 + 2/4 of Jenny's amount 2/4 of Jenny's amount = $1450 - $550 = $900 Jenny's amount at first = $900 x 2 = $1800 :)
