Hi everyone, I've been looking at the best way to represent equations with variables on both sides and also with a negative answer using bar models. The pictures show how easy equations can be to visualise when using bars but I find that when the equation has two variables and a negative answer it is not as clear. is there a better way than the method shown in the 3rd pic?

A child asked me to help with the problem below:Five plates and two cups cost $34. Two plates and five cups cost $22. How much is the cost of a dozen cups?_______While I know how to solve it using simultaneous equations, I want to know if there's a method that could be easily understood by a 7-8 year old.
