Most of the P5/P6 kids should have learnt using algebraic equations to solve such qns from their teachers. If not wrong algebraic equations is one of the strategies which they would learn in schools now.

Thanks for all the replies, greatly appreciate your effort. Though algebra equations are taught, the teaching is still focus on solving questions by model method; children are encouraged to use model in their answer.

Kitty Toh, there is no running away from using simultaneous equations from solving such questions. Using model just means drawing square and triangle instead of X and Y. I hope to see another non-algebra method but I been waiting for a long long time.

Same here. I've been looking forward to a non-algebra method to solve this question. If children do use the algebra/simultaneous equation method, I guess most of them will be using a rudimentary type of drawing squares and rectangles instead of let something be x/y etc.

I can do it without the equation method but i find that method a bit troublesome.

Nadirah a response to your request but I think some of the others have provided similar solutions ... without algebra.

BA Poh Ann algebra is in P6 up to writing, simplifying, substituting expressions in one variable. Solving linear equation in one unknown is in Sec 1. Solving simultaneous equations is in Sec 2.

Yes i know. :) But some schools' teachers are teaching the pupils to solve such qns by using the algebra. Are the kids allowed to use this method in psle? :)

Ban Har Yeap

They can use any method.
