Um Where did u get the 89 units??

Nora started with a total of 50 units. Siti had 39 units plus $2174.

Your kid has made a careless mistake. Instead of writing 78 in the box, ur kid wrote "72". Guess because of this, ur kid could not solve it. :)

Use a box in place of x. Draw a diagram to illustrate the relationship between the numbers so that the child understand. There's only one variable so you should be able to solve it with one equation.

Saw a "short cut" method for such qn: 58 - 4 = 54 8 - 5 = 3 54 ÷ 3 = 18 pupils

My humble opinion that it's important for the child to understand the rationale of the method n not apply without understanding.

A diagram would be clearer to a young child. The short cut method is also derived from the equation i.e. 8x + 4 = 5x + 58.
