Can someone help to solve?

To give an additional 1 sweet to each pupil, Mrs Dewi needs 3 + 42 = 45 sweets (3 sweets is what she is left with if she gives 2 sweets to each pupil & 42 sweets being the additional sweets she needs to add on to these 2 sweets if she wants to give 1 additional sweet to each pupil). Since each pupil will get 1 additional sweet, 45 sweets means there are (45 divide by 1) = 45 pupils. Therefore, total sweets Mrs Dewi has = (45 x 2) + 3 = 93 (Answer)

Not necessary, as long as you can get the correct answer and present your working. However, model method can allow most kids to visualise better.

Depending on your pupils, most neighbor schools advocate the use of model as the pre-cursor to forming algebraic equations to solve problem which has little value to develop problem solving skills for most primary school pupils. But as I have said, it depends on your pupils. Today, most tutors and even some school teachers had start to get their pupils simultaneous equation as the quickest way to solve problems

If the pupil can independently come up with the model I show above, he or she is ready to take on non routine questions which is the ultimate aim of the Singapore math syllabus

Using simultaneous equations might be quick but be sure students understand what they are doing and not mere memorisation. Generally it's still abstract hence the model method is more visual.

I was working with a P6 student on this same question. She preferred to use the Guess and Check method. Here's our solution.

Glad to come across this site. However, by looking at the questions, it's hard to tell which level is it for. If the person who post can add in like this question is for P3, P4 etc, it will be great so I can let my children try working on the questions that is at his level. Many thanks in advance!

Yes it is indeed a good source of questions... I wonder if someone would start one on primary science
