SG chevron_right Primary 5 chevron_right Fractions

Need help with a P5 question. Ahmad and Max saved $448 altogether. Ahmad spent 1/4 of his savings on books and Max spent 3/8 of his savings on CDs. If Ahmad spent $32 more than Max, how much was Max's savings at first?

Your method is correct but to start off, the models drawn are not correct because they show the three people having equal dumplings at the start while the question states that they SOLD equal number of dumplings. If you redraw, you might be able to work it out from there. That is, for Nancy, draw 40% then complete the bar to show 100%. For Roy, draw 75% (equal in length to Nancy's 40%) and complete the bar to show 100%. For Peter, draw 1/3 (equal length to the earlier 40% and 75%) and complete to show 3/3. Try and solve from your models.

Jane Choy, an important concept to clarify with the child who drew the models in the photo is that 100% for N and R need not be the same length because they have different numbers of dumplings, or wholes.

40% = 40/100 = 2/5 (2u - sold and 3u - left) 75% = 75/100 = 3/4 (3u - sold and 1u - left)

40% can be changed to 2/5, 4/10 and 75% to 3/4. The units to choose depends on the other models drawn a show we want to compare them.

This question is easily solved by showing a speed time graph and by noting that the area under the graph must be the same for both cathy and donna. This is because distance is invariant , i.e the same.
