Zhong Shu Hao

each box of 4 has 1 more apple than each box of 3. there are 5 more boxes of 3. 5 x 3 = 15 15/1 = 15 Hence there will be 15 boxes of 4. 15 x 4 = 60 Hence there will be 60 apples.

total number of apples does not change. if i put 4 apples into 1 unit of box, i would have 1 unit with 5 extra boxes if i put 3 apples into each box. agree?

Zhong Shu Hao

the 5 extra box contains 15 apples. the reason why i only need 1 unit of box if i put 4 apples into each box, is because the 15 "extra" apples can be placed into the 1 unit of boxes nicely.

Yueh Mei with the model drawing I can understand better now.but what about the part that Shu Hao did 15/1?must we show this part in the working?

Yueh Mei Liu

It's 15/1 because you're distributing 1 apple to each box. Can just show the step although the calculation is trivial.

My boy tried it via trial and error, using multiples of 3 and 4. He said he's got 60 apples. But I like Zhong Shu Hao's short and sweet method. :)

Especially in Section B, (open ended structured Q), you MUST check that you have written your units. Can u imagine losing 1 mark for every units missing?! Thats more 5 priceless marks gone!!
