The area of the smallest square is 16cm sqr. So the are of the other two squares is 130cm sqr. By guess and check, the areas if the other two squares are 81 and 49cm sqr. 81=9x9 49=7x7 Total perimeter=4x4+4x7+4x9 =80cm.

Thanks all... I thought can't be guess and check , must follow a formula

It's 80

For P6 it would e guess and check...

Tan Junhong

Would that be another method if it's a sec school question?

Zhong Shu Hao

I doubt so... Need to think abt it

Tan Junhong

I doubt so too. Too little information to form another equation since there are 2 unknowns.

Still involves a bit of guessing

Yeo See Yeong

it does. and more complicated too. guess and check will be the way to go.

For kids, it would be better to solve by logic (i.e. trial and error method). Since area of square is side x side, hence writing and matching the squares of possible sides is good. Hope this helps.

146-16=130. This is area of the other 2 squares. Basically need to find 2 perfect squares which will add up to 130. Then it becomes a kind of guess and check. 49 and 81 is the areas of the other 2 squares.

Have to do this guess and check as the sides of the 3 squares are not linked

Although some form of listing and checking would be necessary, there are only two cases to check after some analysis. The side of the medium square must be at least 5, so its area is at least 25. So the maximum area of the big square is less than or equal to 130-25=105, which means maximum is 100. So the squares to consider are 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100. But since the ones digit in 130 is 0, then 25 and 100 are not possible, as there is not another square with 5 or 0 respectively as its ones digit to sum to 0. So the only possible cases are 36+64=100 (wrong) or 49+81=130 (correct). The rest is then straight-forward. It's useful to note that the possible ones digit of squares are only 0, 1, 4, 5, 6, 9.

You may want to comment that Janice is the same in both cases when you are drawing your model because she spent all her money in both cases. :)

It's kind of like a maths investigation in which is a multi layered problem solving task. New do them at highschool but thematic aim is to make them relevant to the kids no the best way is to look at the world around them. We did a task based in mountain biking in Canberra and the slope of the ground etc because it is one of the fastest growing sports in Canberra. Kids were more engaged with some bring closer to home!
