How to explain the part on Timothy received $60 but minus away from total ?

M has more money than T. M-T=480+60=$540 T=(820-540)/2=$140

At first Total-$820 Lost $400/Gain $60 $820-$480+$60= $400 End-$400 Each have same amount in the end... $400/2= $200 each Since Timothy received $60.. At first she had $200-$60=$140(answer)

Hi Lee Huei, From the phrase "they each had the same amount of money", you can work backwards. Start with 2 equal bars for Matthew and Timothy. Next, you ADD 480 for Matthew and SUBTRACT 60 for Timothy. Whatever you have after that, will be the model for "at first". I've attached the model below. Alternatively, if your child wants to work forwards, and that means using $820 to subtract $480 and so on, the answer key on p. 370 (I think) of Daily Dose of Maths P2 makes it clear what to do. Do let me know if you still need help. :-)

It may help to draw more than one model to aid understanding the problem. Once there is understanding, the problem can be solved. When your child says she/he understands, get her/him to explain it back to you in their own words and diagrams so that you can check their understanding.

Be discerning when selecting assessment books for your child. Many assessment books claim to challenge your child by putting in math qns meant for higher levels like p4 or p5. Refer to moe syllabus http://www.moe.gov.sg/education/syllabuses/sciences/ for more details.

I have to agree with Michelle Ng..this is really unnecessary pressure for a 8year old kid.. Might even be discouraging for them...

3a+b=56/2=28 a<b<2a (according to the scale) If a and b are integers, (This is not mentioned in the question.) If a=3,b=17 -> incorrect If a=4,b=16 -> incorrect If a=5,b=13 -> incorrect If a=6,b=10 -> OK If a=7,b=7 -> incorrect area=(a+b)*3a=(6+10)*18=16*18=288 Is this a good question? :(

Thank you very much ! I gave up after trying for 45 mins. It's difficult to explain to a P4 how this works. 😩

I was approached by a parent to discuss this question. I was initially hesitant about it because this question could have been set better. This is especially since Part B is a redundant question. Overall, to solve this question, a student just has to set up a simple list and he will get the answer. It doesn't test on any particular concept except for finding height given base area. Nor does it require much computation or manipulation of the variables given. However, I will still share how it can be solved. Hope it helps!

Sam 4 parts; Gerald 3 parts. Sam had $18 more, so 1 part is $18. Can find each had how much initially and total. Next total split into 3 parts (divide by 3), Sam 1 part and Gerald 2 parts. (4x18)-(7x18)/3=30 Answer is $30.

If your child needs a visual model before getting to the abstract.... A mental picture helps them understand what's happening in the problem and decide what operations to use to arrive at the answer.

Question to ask is: how can we make a total of 7 units to become 3 units with unchanged total? Answer is to find the LCM (21) and subdivide so that 7 small units become 1 big unit. After solving with the model method, and you think your child is ready, you may ask him/her to try and solve in another way with the more abstract ratio method.

Hi Micheal, sorry didn't see your post until now. 4x18 is what Sam had initially. He had 4 parts n each part is 18. Sam n Gerald had total of 7 parts, so 7x18. It was then divided into 3 parts after Sam gave some to Gerald. Sam had one part after the division. So he had (7x18)/3 eventually. (Sam initial 4x18)-(Sam final 7x18/3)=Amt given to Gerald.
