With the $12, the overall average went up by $2.

This means $12 is spread over some number of plates to increase average by $2.

$12/2 = 6.
There are 6 plates at the end, and 5 plates at the start.

The answer is described in two phases.
The left diagram represents an average cost of $5 but the plates are unknown.
The right diagram shows an additional plate of $17.
Then,
$17
= $5 + a certain number of $2.
= $5 + $12.
How many $2 do you need to make $12? 6. So, this means 6 plates.
Add in the plate that was bought and you have 7 plates. :)

Sorry. It is 6 plates. Ignore the last step of adding 1 more plate.

The model drawing shows a B4 and After scenario.
7-5=2 / increase in average price
17-7= 10 / difference between +1 plate vs new ave
10รท2=5 plates at first / difference in value vs change in value
If you do algebra, it looks like :
No. of plates = 1u
1ux5 + 17 = (1u + 1) ร 7
5u + 17 = 7u + 7
2u = 10
1u = 5
If...it is a hypothetical scenario.
Hence, ans key is correct.
6 plates is not the required answer.
She bought 5 plates. / correct.

Let the final number of girls in the playground be 1 unit.
4 x (1 unit + 14) = 12 units
1 unit = 7
Boys: 12 x 7 = 84
