a) Shaded area
= 1/2 x 14 x 16 - 1/2 x 6 x 8
= 112 - 24
= 88 cm2
b) Total area of 3 squares
= 10 x 10 + 8 x 8 + 6 x 6
= 100 + 64 + 36
= 200
Percentage shaded
= 88 / 200 x 100%
= 44%
Need help on this P3 Maths question taken from a school test paper. Question looks weird but guess there a method to determine the answer.

1 km 780 m + 1 km 780 m = 2 km 1560 m = 3 km 560 m

Could be a typo in the answer key?

Thanks for the advice !

The question itself has a problem.
If they have given the distance that Ben cycled from his place to the park and back again, why are they asking the distance again?

Allan Chew
Exactly. That is why we wanted some advice. There could be a problem with the question itself.

It's the phrasing of the question.
Maybe it could be:
The distance between Ben's home and the park is 1km 780m.
Ben cycled from his home to the park and back home again.
What was the total distance Ben cycled?

You are right. That sounds more likely to be the question.

1km 780m=1780+1780= 3km590m

The question a bit weird. I would just write 1km 780m & ask the tr to attend english class. Lol

If I said, "I walked 2km to and fro the park from my house.", does that mean that I walked a total of 4km? I would lose all the fats very soon by doing half the work. We are implying the model and the answer without understanding the question. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of the Model Methods?

Here's another example: John has 4 times as many stamps as Mary. If John has 144 more stamps, how many stamps did Mary have?

144/4?

That's the given answer, Audrey. But how do you construct the model? If I say I have 4x as much money as you and I have $40. You would have $10. Then that would be $30 more than you. You follow my argument? More than and as much as are different.

144÷3?

Actually it's really a test of the English language. We r already struggling so I really pity the kiddos.. Thanks for teaching. Get to learn lots from this. :)

The English structure has a problem? sounds like 1780 from what the sentence is saying, to and fro.

I'm assuming u should break up the question when u read it. "Ben cycled 1km 780m from his home to the park.." pause.. "and then back home again." So total distance is 3km 560m.

Sorry See Yeong, I don't get your working...how u get 288 for A.
Yeo See Yeong
Do u get 9:1:1 ? Since b+C =64 and b:C is 1:1, hence b = 32 and C = 32. So A is 9x32 = 288

Sorry for not informing that this is a P5 qns...they have yet to learn algebra yet.

It's actually model. Like many mentioned, model is in fact algebra presented in graphical form. If u look at the model, the solution is exactly the same.

Hi Xavier, for qns 8 - I don't understand 2nd part. Ratio 9: 1: 1, why u bring in the shaded part into the ratio?
Xavier Sng
Good evening Catherine. We are required to determine the area of the shaded portion. The unshaded area of the rectangle s 9 units, so if the whole rectangle is 10 units, that must mean the shaded portion is 1 unit since the same reasoning applies to the square.
