Izam Marwasi, your algebraic approach is perfect, except you wrote -14 instead of +14. Small issue ☺

SG chevron_right Primary 5 chevron_right Number and Algebra

Marie had the same number of red, green and blue beads at first. After using some red and green beads and 1108 blue beads to make necklaces, Marie had 4250 beads left. There were twice as many red beads as green beads left. The number of blue beads left was 680 fewer than the number of red beads left. How many blue beads did she have at first?

So can you find how many blue beads were left? Since 1108 blue beads were used, how many blue beads were there initially?

Firstly, form up a model for the situation in the end. 2 units for red beads. 1 unit for green beads and 2 units - 680 for blue beads. To solve for 1 unit, 4250 + 680 = 4930 = 5 units. 1 unit = 4930/5 = 986. In this case, it is better to use blue beads to work backwards cause we know how many blue beads were used. 2 units - 680 = 1292 blue beads in the end. Hence, working backwards 1 step, 1292 + 1108 = 2400.

SG chevron_right Primary 5 chevron_right Fractions

Today's question involves the 'before and after' concept. Students need to draw the 'after' model and from there, work back to get the 'before' model. From that point onwards, it becomes very mechanical and easy to solve. Hope it helps!
